The Deaths of John Locke, Charlie, and Michael

Stories That Define Three of LOST's Most Influential Characters

While many of LOST's leading characters lived through the final seconds of the show's fifth season, three met more tragic and unfortunate fates than their companions.

Introduced in the show's pilot episode, John Locke, Charlie Pace, and Michael Dawson departed LOST earlier than expected, but their stories yield tales of triumph and tragedy, and their influence remains strong even after their departures from the physical world.

John Locke, Before the Wheelchair

Having been abandoned by his parents, John Locke struggles from adolescence to adulthood, constantly searching within to harness the strength necessary to guide him forward and add purpose to his journey. At pivotal moments, he feels drawn in different directions, but holds fast to an ideal that destiny is his own to control.

Sought out by his biological mother, Locke receives word from her concerning his father's whereabouts, and he sets out to find and greet the man. After forging a close and emotional bond, it is not long before Locke learns that his father is ill.

Requiring a transplant, Locke agrees to donate his kidney to his father, and subsequently falls into a deep state of depression after learning in the hospital that his father conned him, abandoning his son for a second time.

Obsessed with learning the reasons behind his father's actions, Locke attempts to make contact with him, but is prohibited from drawing close. Meanwhile, he meets a love interest, who expresses deep concern over Locke's obsession to know the truth.

When finally confronted, Locke's father confirms the con and, with Locke's back against the wall, he pushes his son out of a high-rise building, paralyzlng him from the waste down.

John Locke, After the Wheelchair

While receiving physical therapy, Locke is turned on to the idea of attending a "Walkabout" tour of the Australian Outback, promptly making plans despite his confinement to a wheelchair. Upon his arrival in Sydney, Locke gets turned away due to his condition, and is prevented from fulfilling his dream by participating the "Walkabout."

On the journey home, Flight 815 crashes on the island, and Locke manages to miraculously rise to his feet. Unbeknownst to most of his companions, he is given a second chance to walk, and he takes full advantage of this new freedom by volunteering to hunt and explore the island.

Locke's self-defining journey to discover purpose continues, until his curiosity leads to an event that causes the island to rock back and forth through time, but not before several survivors, including Jack Shephard, leave its shores on a helicopter.

Told that the only way to make the time shift stop is by bringing his friends back, Locke is issued the task of fixing the problem, which eventually leads to his expulsion from the island and subsequent murder in New York City.

Before his death, Locke convinces Jack that he must return to the island and, upon Jack's return, Locke's body, confined to a coffin and wearing the black shoes of Jack's dead father, accompanies Jack on Ajira flight 316.

Charlie Pace

Much to the displeasure of fans everywhere, Charlie Hieronymus Pace went missing from the LOST universe after his character gallantly risked his life to save the remaining survivors, swimming to an underwater station and destroying equipment set up to jam outgoing broadcasts, but drowning in the process.

Prior to the plane crash, Charlie and his brother struck gold when their British rock band spawned a hit song on the radio, but the experience was short-lived and the band fell into a nasty dry spell after Charlie's brother turned him onto drugs.

Still haunted by his addiction, Charlie learns to overcome fear and doubt after being presented with a number of challenges on the island. He kicks the drug habit and reclaims his status as Clair Littleton's trusted companion, after falling out of her favor briefly. Upon his friend's departure from the island and return to California, a "dead" Charlie Pace visits Hugo "Hurley" Reyes at a psyche ward in Los Angeles.

Michael Dawson

While accompanying his only child to the United States after his ex-wife's sudden death in Australia, Michael Dawson finds himself faced with the challenge of raising a son he never knew. After the plane crash, he becomes stranded with his son, Walt, and tries desperately to get off the island with overwhelming concern for Walt's safety.

While jettison on a raft built using skills that Michael acquired working in construction, Walt is kidnapped at sea by a band of mysterious locals, and Michael sets out on a mission to get him back, eventually securing a ticket home, but not before betraying his closest companions and committing murder.

Back in New York, Michael's relationship with Walt spoils and, overwhelmed by guilt, he attempts to commit suicide and fails. Next, he enlists to work as a deck hand on a boat returning to the island and, looking to right wrongs made in the past, Michael plots to blow up the boat, taking his own life with it.
